The Stimmen app is a tool built to collect data for linguistic research through fun or interesting activities. You, the citizen scientist, can record your own language, or the language of others, with this app. In some cases the app can even guess where youre from. The app currently consists of a picture naming game, a free speech recorder and a dialect quiz. Use these to give your voice to research!

Different languages and dialects surround us all of the time. This may seem like an uninteresting fact of life, but for researchers knowledge about how people speak in their languages and dialects can answer questions about how human brains work, and how our societies function. Knowledge about language use and structure can also be applied for automatic recognition of voices and speech - for use in instruments that will become extremely important to us in the future.

The Stimmen app is made by the University of Groningen with funding from Lân fan taal, as part of Leeuwarden 2018 (European Capital of Culture)

Picture Naming Game
In the Picture Naming Game the challenge is to name as many pictures as possible - you can probably name them all in your native language, but what about your second or third language? Our goal is to collect as many recordings of as many languages and dialects as possible, so click the recording button to start naming!

Speech Map
In the Speech Map you can listen to other peoples recordings, or make a recording of your own dialect or first language. Why not tell us a joke or a story from your childhood? Or about your plans for the future!

Dialect Quiz
Are you from Fryslân in the Netherlands? If so, this app can guess where youre from on the basis of your answers to 19 short questions. Try it out to see whether you have a traceable accent, or whether the app guesses that you come from somewhere else!
